The overall condition of this book and dust jacket are Very Fine. There is some foxing visible on the outside edges of the pages when the book is closed. Interior is clean.

This hardcover book with dust jacket is considered one of the early staples on the subject of ship prints. The contents include 9 chapters: Introduction; The First Ship Prints; Shipping and Engraving; Art and Adventure; Prints and the Ride of Sea-Power; Mezzotint and Aquatint; Early Nineteenth-Century Ship Prints; Merchant Ship Prints; Prints of Fore-and-Aft Vessels and an Index. There are 69 prints shown in either color or black-and-white, with a listing in the front of the book. Binding is solid. The bottom of the back cover and the last half of book show old damp stains on the bottom edges of the pages.No sticking or mold. The signature of "L. Francis Herreshoff", a former owner, is on the inside of the front cover. Herreshoff was a boat designer, naval architect, author and editor.

This blue-cloth hardcover book has an aged paper spine label that bears the title of the book. The label has had some losses to the top edge but the entire title remains intact. The binding is solid in the front, and although solid still in the back, there is a split in the paper at the junction of the back cover and the last page. Inside the front cover is pasted the book plate of a former owner that reads "Ex Libris Crandon." Pasted in to the first white page is two-page "Circular of Information" that shows a ca. 1921 photograph of the museum building and lists the exhibit halls, the officers, etc.,--in excellent condition. A small pasted bookseller label is just below this and reads "Chas. E. Lauriat Co., Importers and Booksellers, 385 Wash'n St. Boston." The volume includes several chapters including an Introduction; Oil and Water-Color Paintings of Merchant Vessels; Miscellaneous Pictures of Vessels; Sketches in Water-Color and Black-And-White; Paintings and Models of Naval Vessels of the United States; Paintings of Miscellaneous Naval Vessels; Paintings of Wharves, Harbors and Foreign Ports; Models; Nautical Instruments; Portraits; The Collection of Flags; Summary of Other Collections in the Marine Room. Five brief appendices round out the book: Ship Building and Ship Builders; Painters of the Ship Pictures; Painters of the Portraits; Boats and Models in the Ethnological Collections; References and an Index. 188 pages. Numerous black and white illustrations of objects and paintings in the collection.

This biographical sketch focuses on the life of a prominent Salem, Massachusetts, merchant during a period of great prosperity in American maritime history. There are 9 illustrations and 124 pages. A number of letters, account books, and other primary sources have been used to tell the story and the book itself is beautifully printed.Appendix A lists the 7 ships known as Letters of Marque of which Gray was a part owner including the HIND, VENUS, DEFENCE, HECTOR, HYNDE, IRIS AND UNION. Appendix B lists the ships owned by Gray--including 184 vessels in a forty-year period. All known information is included about the ships, including name, tonnage, investors, etc. An Index completes the volume.
